I’ve done many speaking engagements last several years and it is normal to start filter the bunch of requests.
Recently (June 2005) I decided to stop accepting ordinary speaking engagements. I can skip this decision and will accept offers and invitations only if they are exceptionally interesting for me or evaluated as important.
I donate most of my free time to work on Free and Open Source Software issues, without any compensation. Paid speaking is usually not my style but consulting is my business. So if you are not representative of not-for-profit organization or your event is business related and you can pay, please do.
Of course, all travel and lodging must be paid by the conference sponsors also.
